October Gardening in Arizona: What You Should Be Planting Right Now
October is one of the most exciting months for Arizona gardeners. As temperatures begin to cool,
it's finally time to enjoy spending more time outdoors and start planting many of the vegetables and flowers that thrive during our cooler growing season.
If you've been waiting for the Arizona heat to ease up, now is your moment!
Vegetables to Plant in October
Many cool-season vegetables love Arizona's fall weather, including:
- Lettuce
- Spinach
- Kale
- Broccoli
- Cauliflower
- Cabbage
- Carrots
- Radishes
- Beets
- Swiss chard
- Peas
Planting these crops now gives them plenty of time to establish before winter arrives.
Add Some Color
October is also a wonderful time to brighten your landscape with seasonal flowers such as:
- Snapdragons
- Calendula
- Dianthus
- Pansies
- Petunias
- Alyssum
These flowers not only make your yard beautiful but also help attract beneficial pollinators throughout the cooler months.
Don't Forget Your Soil
Healthy gardens begin with healthy soil.
Before planting:
- Mix in compost.
- Remove old summer plants.
- Check irrigation.
- Apply mulch to help retain moisture.
A little preparation now can make a big difference throughout the season.
Enjoy the Season
One of my favorite things about Arizona is that our gardening season really comes alive in the fall. Cooler mornings, fresh soil, and new plants remind us that every season brings new opportunities to grow.
Whether you're planting a few herbs or filling an entire garden bed, October is the perfect time to get started.
Happy gardening!
