Arizona Gardening in July: What to Plant and How to Keep Your Garden Thriving

by Mercy Kamau

One of the things I love most about living in Arizona is that gardening doesn't have to stop just because it's summer. While July brings some of our hottest temperatures, it's also an opportunity to prepare your garden for the months ahead and help your landscape thrive through the season.

Arizona gardening is definitely different from gardening in other parts of the country. Our intense sun, dry climate, and unique soil mean we have to garden a little smarter, but with the right approach, you can enjoy beautiful flowers, healthy vegetables, and a yard that flourishes year-round.

Whether you're new to Arizona or you've been here for years, here are a few July gardening tips that can make a big difference.

Water Deeply, Not Frequently

One of the biggest mistakes I see is watering too often for short periods. Shallow watering encourages shallow roots, which makes plants more vulnerable to the summer heat.

Instead, water deeply so moisture reaches the entire root system. Deep watering encourages stronger roots that can better withstand Arizona's hot summer days.

If possible, water early in the morning before temperatures rise. This reduces evaporation and gives your plants time to absorb the moisture they need.

Add Fresh Mulch

Mulch is one of the best investments you can make for your Arizona garden.

A two- to three-inch layer of mulch helps:

  • Keep soil cooler
  • Reduce water evaporation
  • Prevent weeds
  • Improve soil as it naturally breaks down

Organic mulch such as wood chips or shredded bark works especially well in Arizona landscapes.

Watch for Heat Stress

Even well-established plants can struggle during extreme heat.

Signs of heat stress include:

  • Wilting leaves
  • Brown leaf edges
  • Sunburn spots
  • Premature flower drop

Some afternoon wilting is normal during Arizona summers. If your plants recover by evening, they're usually doing fine. However, if they remain wilted overnight, they may need additional watering or shade.

Don't Forget Your Trees

Shade trees work hard during July.

Give them a slow, deep watering around the outer edge of the canopy where the feeder roots are located. Healthy trees not only survive the summer better but also provide much-needed shade that helps cool your yard and even your home.

Prepare for Monsoon Season

Arizona's monsoon season brings welcome rain—but it can also bring strong winds.

Take a few minutes to:

  • Stake young trees if needed
  • Remove damaged branches
  • Secure lightweight containers
  • Check your drainage around garden beds

A little preparation now can help prevent storm damage later.

Start Planning Your Fall Garden

Believe it or not, July is the perfect time to begin thinking about your fall vegetable garden.

As temperatures begin to cool over the coming weeks, you'll be ready to plant crops like:

  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Lettuce
  • Carrots
  • Beets
  • Spinach

Planning ahead gives you a head start on one of Arizona's best gardening seasons.

Build Healthy Arizona Soil

Healthy soil is the foundation of every successful garden.

Arizona's native soil often contains a lot of clay or caliche, making it difficult for roots to grow.

Adding compost throughout the year helps improve drainage, increases organic matter, and creates healthier growing conditions for flowers, vegetables, and shrubs.

Small improvements each season can lead to big results over time.

Gardening Helps You Plant More Than Flowers

One reason I enjoy gardening so much is because it reminds me that good things take time.

Just like building a home, building a beautiful garden doesn't happen overnight. It takes patience, consistency, and care—but the results are worth it.

Whether you're growing vegetables, planting flowers, or simply making your backyard a place where your family enjoys spending time together, every little step helps you create a home you love.

That's one of the reasons I enjoy helping families put down roots here in Arizona. Homeownership isn't just about buying a house—it's about creating a place where life can grow, memories can be made, and your family can truly thrive.

Happy gardening, and here's to making the most of this Arizona summer!
